Although the spring semester may be winding down at Misericordia University, learning continues throughout the summer. In addition to the credit/non-credit summer courses and various camps, the university also sponsors a number of conferences which are near and dear to us in the Center for Adult and Continuing Education.

The 23rd Annual Cecilia Meighan, RSM Institute of Law and Religious Life runs from June 9 through 15. Here we welcome those elected or appointed to positions of leadership in Roman Catholic religious congregations for a week of professional development programs. This institute gives the attendees the opportunity to not only get advice and input from the faculty, but also from their peers.

This year’s institute focuses on the rights and obligations of members of religious institutions and boasts an impressive faculty, including Institute Director Bernadette Kenny, RSHM, JD; Kelly Connors, pm, JCD; and Sharon Holland, IHM, JCD.

We look forward to welcoming back the faculty and attendees, and, of course, honoring the memory of the Institutes’ founder, Sister Cecilia Meighan, RSM.

The 39th Annual Elder Religious & Diocesan Priests Workshop quickly follows June 17 through 23. Designed for sisters, ministers, brothers, deacons, priests, and laity, this week-long workshop provides practical applications and solutions, along with a strong support network across the spiritual, psychological, medical, pastoral, and practical aspects of caring for and administering to the elders in religious congregations and dioceses.

Along with Misericordia’s Jim Siberski, MS, CMC, we look forward to welcoming back Planning and Coordinating Committee members Mary C. Hopkins, OP, MS and Wayne Fitzpatrick, MM, MA, MS, C-GCM.

Workshop attendees will benefit from the various sessions on topics such as hoarding, differentiating among depression, dementia, and delirium, and living fully and creatively in our later years, all facilitated by experts in their respective fields.

Finally, summer at Misericordia would not be complete with without the 48th Annual Institute on Sacred Scripture, which runs July 31 through August 5. Executive Director Dr. Marie Noel Keller, RSM, Ph.D. leads this institute in The Joy of Scripture. Best described by Sister Noel herself, the institute “offers a week of inspiring and thought-provoking scripture study at a location of quiet beauty and seclusion for mediation and respite, with many recreational activities on campus or nearby.”

Every year, attendees look forward to the teachings of the institute’s faculty, including Dr. John R. Donahue, SJ, Dr. Bonnie Thurston, Dr. Barbara Green, OP, and Dr. Patrick Mullen.

The Institute on Sacred Scripture is open to people of all educational backgrounds and those in positions of leadership, such as administers, nurses, nurse practitioners, retirement planners, geriatric personnel, social workers, recreation therapists, counselors, outreach workers, dietitians, chaplains, pastoral staff, and membership personnel.
