A Support System that Goes Above and Beyond

Posted by Guest Student Blogger on Oct 25, 2017

There is no shame in asking for help, especially when your grades are on the line. Every college has some sort of student support system to help their students that are struggling and to give them the assistance they need to be successful. Here at Misericordia, students find that there is always an outlet available for guidance and support. Whether it is peer tutoring for a challenging class, writing assistance, talking about personal problems, or preparing for a job search, Misercordia goes above and beyond to get our students the extra help they may need.

The Student Success Center offers many different outlets for students in need. From free tutoring to a writing center, they’re guaranteed to have you covered. Tutoring sessions are run by students that have previously had the class and received a grade of “B” or better. The advantage to having a student tutor is that they’ve already had the professor and know exactly what they’re looking for in essays or what the tests will be like. Also, having a student tutor is a more personal experience. Being tutored by a professor is just like being in class again. It’s easier for students to connect with each other and get through difficult classes together, voicing their woes along the way.

Student tutoring also offers a chance for our students to earn some money for themselves. Dollar-sign-clipart-3.jpeg

Misericordia offers an opportunity for papers to be proof-read and peer-edited before they are turned in. The Writing Center guarantees a one letter grade boost to your paper if you take it to them for help. Of course, they won’t write your paper for you, but they’ll proof-read it for content and style. Writing isn’t easy for everyone and the Writing Center knows this. All you need to do is bring a copy of your paper to be edited and an open mind.

The Guaranteed Placement Program is another great perk offered by Misericordia’s Insalaco Center for Career Development. It is a unique, post-schooling tool that I haven’t seen offered at any other school I had looked at. There are specific, easy to follow steps each year that will help you acquire a job after you graduate. For example, they frequently host mock-interviews and resume workshops for students seeking employment. In order to stay in the program, you have to follow the guidelines that they set and get involved in activities all geared towards future employment. If you can’t find a job within six months after you graduate, the Guaranteed Placement Program will find a paid internship for you, as long as you completed the program.

I can speak from personal experience: take advantage of the support is offered at any school you go to. I picked up two tutors this year for classes that I thought I might need extra help in. It’s always easier to book a tutor in advance instead of struggling to find a tutor when you’re already in jeopardy. Also, you have to move quickly because they fill up fast. If you’re unsure as to whether or not you’ll need a tutor, just book one. You can always cancel your sessions if you find that you don’t need it.

While no school wants their students to fail, Misericordia actually does more to ensure that every student has the support they need to excel in class and in life. From our student tutors to the Guaranteed Placement Program, you won’t find better support programs than at Misericordia. Take it from me – a busy sophomore speech-language pathology student who is also on the field hockey team – Misericordia makes it possible for you to do it all.
